Timberframe Roof - Mastodon Skeleton Sculpture
July 25-29, 2022
It's said that the success of an earthen building depends on "a good pair of boots and a good hat" - that is, a good foundation, and a good roof. This week we will be constructing the "hat" of what will be a small building made with a mix of reclaimed and earthen materials.
Ashley Kehl of Friends of the Trees will be leading the carpentry aspects of this work party.
The roof will be a clerestory featuring the use of round wood construction with sky lights.
Building site is among a small homestead with gardens and forest to enjoy, a short walk from Gibb's Lake. Camping on the land for the week is welcome, as is collaborative meal sharing.
The roof will ready the project for mud installation either in the autumn or the following year.

why mastodon?
When this building is ready for mud installation, it will be sculpted into the shape of a great mastodon with tusks and trunk. As we are building the roof, we are imagining the rafters as the Mastodon's rib cage, with the four existing roof posts as its legs, and the ridgebeam as its spine.
